Ryan White, Republican from Rodanthe, has filed to run against Doug Doughtie in the Republican Primary for Sheriff in Dare County. White owns Hatteras Jack, a fishing shop in Rodanthe.  Doughtie was a Lieutenant with the Dare County Sheriff’s Dept and most recently the School Resource Officer at FFHS.  ToD has sent interview questions to both candidates so that we can learn more about them.

The companies of Hobbs Upchurch and Atlantic Corp are two of Marc Basnight’s biggest contributors.  Atlantic Packaging Corp, based in Wilmington, is owned by Rusty Carter.  His son Wes Carter works for Hobbs Upchurch & Associates, an Engineering firm based in Southern Pines.  Rusty Carter, if you remember, is a friend of Mike Easley and was subpoenaed to the Board of Elections in connection with his contributions to Easley.

In 2008, the employees and family members of these two companies contributed $120,000 to Basnight’s campaign(more…)

According to the Greenville Daily Reflector, Congressman Walter Jones supports a ‘listening tour’ for members of Congress. He wants to pass a bill, yes, pass a bill, that requires 16 members of Congress  to criss-cross the United States in an effort to ‘gather ideas’ and submit economic recommendations to Congress.   Hello Congressman, it’s called going into your district and listening to your constituents. It’s called educating yourself on economic matters.  Do we really need a bill in order for legislators to listen to their constituents and educate themselves?  Sounds like some legislators have been in Washington too long.

The battle isn’t over yet, but the Camden County School Board listened and acted last night at their board meeting!!

After listening to public comments on the proposed NC Social Studies curriculum, the board voiced their concerns about the changes and immediately requested Superintendent Ron Melchiorre to draft a letter to the NC Dept. of Instruction to state their opposition.

Thanks to all who contacted the board!  Your voices were heard!

The North Carolina Dept of Public Instruction is bowing to public pressure over its proposed changes to the U. S. History curriculum.  The proposal is being sent back to the drawing boards.  The DPI received over 7,000 emails, most of them negative.  And then this past weekend Senator Marc Basnight stepped in and essentially told the DPI, “don’t you dare”.  After a day of defending themselves against Basnight’s letter, the DPI cried ‘Uncle’.

According to WRAL, DPI has already begun work on a second draft proposal.  (more…)
