A Civitas poll conducted this week in NC Senate District 1 shows Marc Basnight (D) in the lead over his opponent Hood Richardson (R), 49% to 39%.  12% are undecided.  The poll’s margin of error is 3.4%.  The poll of 798 registered voters was taken July 29-August 1st.

This is good news for Richardson, the popular four term Beaufort County Commissioner.  An incumbent polling below 50% is generally considered to be in trouble.  Factoring in the undecided voters, the margin of error, and the general mood against incumbents, Marc Basnight, the 12-term incumbent, appears to be in trouble for the first time in his long career.  Compare these numbers with Basnight’s 2006 re-election where he soundly defeated Ron Toppin 69/31.

Senate District 1 is composed of the Counties of Dare, Currituck, Beaufort, Camden, Hyde, Tyrrell, Pasquotank and Washington.
