Dare County has elected its first Republican Sheriff.  Doug Doughtie easily defeated incumbent Rodney Midgett 56/44.  Midgett carried Manteo, Wanchese, Nags Head and East Lake while Doughtie carried Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills,  Colington, Manns Harbor, Stumpy Point and all precincts south of the Bonner Bridge.

Dare County voters returned  Republican Jack Shea to the Board of County Commissioners.  Mr. Shea defeated his opponent, Democrat Robin Mann of Manns Harbor, 53/47.  Shea carried Southern Shores, Duck, Kitty Hawk, KDH, Colington, Avon, Buxton and Frisco.  Mann carried Nags Head, Manteo, Wanchese, Manns Harbor, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Chicamacomico and Hatteras.

In the General Assembly races, Democrats Marc Basnight and Tim Spear both scored wins over their Republican opponents.  Basnight defeated Hood Richardson 55/45.  Richardson carried Currituck and Camden counties while Basnight carried Dare, Hyde, Beaufort, Pasquotank and Washington. Tyrrell had not yet reported at press time.  Basnight carried Dare by a margin of 56/44.

Spear defeated his opponent Bob Steinburg by the same margin, 55/45.  Spear carried Washington, Chowan and Hyde while Steinburg carried Dare.  Steinburg carried Dare by a margin of 53/47.

In national races, incumbent Republican Senator Richard Burr  and  incumbent Republican Congressman Walter B Jones will return to Washington.  Burr defeated Secretary of State Elaine Marshall 55/43.  Jones left his opponent Johnny Rouse in the dust, 72/26.
