Marc Basnight will make this his last term in the North Carolina Senate.  According to WRAL, Basnight’s spokesman Amy Fulk confirmed that Basnight will retire in 2012.

The thirteen term Democrat beat his opponent Hood Richardson on November 2nd but lost his position as President Pro Tempore of the Senate.  The Republicans gained eleven seats in that body to secure a veto-proof majority of 31 seats out of 50. Basnight has gone from the penthouse to the outhouse in terms of power.  He’ll serve the next two years as a back-bencher and then close the curtain on his long career in Raleigh.
