Outer Banks Voice is reporting that the race for Marc Basnight’s Senate seat is heating up. According to OBV, Commissioners Judge and Tillett are interested as is former Chamber of Commerce President Paul Tine. Rep. Tim Spear’s name was mentioned but I’ve been told by a few insiders that he is a no-go. Rep Bill Owens of Pasquotank County is also rumored to be on the list but I’m told that he’s not interested. He may retire himself before too long. Former Rep Art Williams of Beaufort is on the list and interested. He was easily beaten this past November for the Dist 6 NC House seat. A few other Beaufort County candidates are considering the position as well, according to the Washington Daily News

In order to win the nod of the Democrat Party, the candidate will need a majority of votes of the NC Democratic Party’s Senate District 1 Executive Committee.  The eight counties will each select two delegates to the Committee.   Each county’s delegates will have a weighted vote based on their population.  Here are the approximate votes that each County will have:  Beaufort 150, Pasquotank 135, Dare 110, Currituck 80, Washington 40, Camden 30, Hyde 15 and Tyrrell 15.

My first criteria for a candidate is electability in 2012. Let’s help the Dems find someone who can be beaten handily in 2012. I personally like Art Williams. He was an easy target for the Republicans in District 6 due to his pathetic record in the House. I vote for Art! What about you? Take our poll.
